Liège, December 13, 2024 - Press Release

Modernization of the Lighting on the Jetty of the Liège Yacht Port

As part of its commitment to modernizing its port infrastructure and energy transition, the Liège Autonomous Port has recently replaced the old lighting on the jetty of the Liège Yacht Port with a LED lighting system. This initiative meets ambitious environmental objectives while improving safety and comfort for marina users. The 20 streetlight heads on the Liège Yacht Port jetty have recently been replaced with LED equipment in accordance with the Wallonia Public Service Mobility and Infrastructure - Hydraulic Roads Directorate - SPW MI.

This shift to LED technology offers several significant advantages:

  • Energy consumption reduction: the old bulbs have been replaced with LEDs that consume up to 80% less energy. This change allows for an estimated saving of 11,000 kWh per year, resulting in an 83% reduction in energy consumption.
  • Improved brightness: a preliminary photometric study, carried out by the Liège-based lighting company Schréder, company of the year, helped optimize the lighting choice to minimize light pollution for both pedestrians and boaters. LED lighting offers better visibility, thus enhancing safety for boaters and port users, while reducing glare risks for both pedestrians and boaters.
  • Increased durability: LEDs have a longer lifespan, thus reducing long-term maintenance costs.
  • Biodiversity preservation: The lighting modernization also contributes to minimizing the environmental impact of nighttime lighting on local wildlife.

The total investment for this modernization amounts to €16,700 including VAT, for which the Liège Autonomous Port plans to request a subsidy from Wallonia to support this initiative.

According to Mr. Demeffe, Acting Director General of the Liège Autonomous Port, “This approach reflects the Liège Autonomous Port's commitment to responsible energy management.”

Finally, this modernization is part of a long-term vision towards 2030, a key date set in the new sustainable development decree, which aims to make public lighting 100% LED. This initiative is an important step towards achieving this goal and reducing the ecological footprint of the Liège Autonomous Port, which remains determined to continue its efforts to modernize its port infrastructure while contributing to a more sustainable future.
