One of the missions of the Liege Port Authority is to promote inland waterway transport, an environmentally friendly mode of transport, by developing the use of ports, their development and management.
The increase in environmental concerns, sustainable development becoming more and more topical and the problems linked to the saturation of our roads are giving companies more incentive to find other ways of transporting goods. River transport has its place in this development.
The Liege Port Authority, Belgium's leading inland port, is a player in sustainable development on a daily basis. Indeed, compared with other modes of goods transport, river transport offers many advantages. For example, it is:
- a safe and reliable solution: the risks of accidents are extremely reduced. They are reliable in their delivery times.
- an ecological solution: this mode of transport is environmentally friendly. A 1,350-tonne boat sailing at full load represents around forty fewer lorries on our roads!
- finally, a competitive and economical solution: it is inexpensive in terms of energy and can transport very large tonnages, making it a low-polluting means of mass transport.
